Four commissioners were formally sworn into the City of Sweetwater Commission at a public swearing-in ceremony, city leaders said. The ceremony confirmed the reelection of Ydania Lano, Jose Marti, Ian Vallecio and Marcos Villanueva.
The re-elected commissioners took their oaths during an event that included remarks from Mayor Jose Pepe Diaz and a letter read on behalf of U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody. Danielle Zuniga read Moody’s letter congratulating the commissioners on their reelection.
Mayor Jose Pepe Diaz gave the event’s keynote address and said the city is united in its work for residents, adding: "The most important thing is the liberty to be able to choose who represents you, and the person that best fits what you want in a representation." Assistant Chief Frank Fernandez administered the oath to Commissioner Marcos Villanueva; Mayor Diaz administered the oaths for the other commissioners after they requested him to do so.
In his remarks, Commissioner Marcos Villanueva described his long service in Sweetwater and highlighted local development prospects, saying the city has "over $10,000,000,000 worth of development." Other newly sworn commissioners and speakers offered short remarks thanking families, volunteers and public-safety personnel.
The ceremony included an invocation by Pastor Raz Vasquez, presentation of colors by the Sweetwater Police Department honor guard, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Commission President Reynaldo Rey, and a benediction by Pastor Felix Valdivia. Organizers said refreshments were provided after the ceremony.
No formal policy votes, ordinance actions, budget decisions or committee motions were recorded in the transcript of the event. The proceeding was a ceremonial swearing-in and public remarks.
