The Ohio House on May 27 adopted House Resolution 101 in support of the city of Cleveland’s bid to host the 2030 Special Olympics USA Games.
Representative Byrd, sponsor, described the games’ mission to provide year-round sports training and competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities and urged the Special Olympics site-selection committee to choose Cleveland. Representative Brewer and other sponsors emphasized Cleveland’s venues, volunteer base and statewide benefits.
Chair Melanie Miller said testimony and input from Special Olympics Ohio, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and local stakeholders support the bid and cited an economic-impact estimate presented to the committee: roughly $70 million in economic activity, participation by representatives from all 50 states plus Canada and the Caribbean, about 55,500 athletes and coaches, more than 10,000 volunteers and more than 100,000 fans, as described by sponsors on the floor.
The resolution was adopted with a recorded vote of 90 affirmative votes and 0 negative. Supporters urged prompt action because the site-selection decision was expected in the coming days.
