Kent mayor highlights youth substance-use prevention after DAPE event

“This last week we celebrated our 130 birthday. So, really proud of the history we have, really proud of the future that is laid out in front of us,” Ralph said, then described the DAPE event as “an opportunity for parents to come in and hear from resources around education for your kids on substance use, prevention.”
Ralph said one of his main takeaways was that the majority of children are not using alcohol, tobacco or drugs. “In a lot of cases, 8 out of 10 kids aren't using substances,” he said, and added that the community should “be celebrating” that majority while focusing services on the smaller group that needs help.
The mayor described the event as a chance for parents to learn about local prevention tools and resources. He attributed the program to the Kent Drug Free Coalition and the Kent Police Department Community Education Group and said he looked forward to more events like it in the community.
The remarks were part of the mayor’s weekly update and occurred during an announcements segment of the update.
