Punta Gorda zoning staff told councilors that the Fisherman's Village Independence Day event has received Development Review Committee approval and requested a road closure for fireworks and event activities.
Rachel Berry, zoning official, said both the Fisherman's Village event and a separate event at Laishley Park had completed DRC review and received event permits; only the Fisherman's Village event requested road closures. "Both events have gone through DRC and received their event permit approval. But the one here at Laishley is not requesting road closures, just the one at Fisherman's Village," Berry said.
Staff said police and fire personnel would be present, with officers on barges where fireworks are launched and personnel on the ground for crowd and traffic safety. The council asked whether the applicant or the city bears the cost of public works and police for event support; staff said the applicant pays those fees.
No vote was recorded at the pre-agenda session. The item will appear on the formal June 4 agenda for any final approvals required by the council.
Background: Fisherman's Village staged a similar event the prior year; staff said the city's operational approach will match that past practice, with public-safety personnel assigned to the launch area and onshore management of road and crowd safety.
