Seagoville students win duck-safety art contest; city presents awards

Donna Hudson, representing the Keith C. Polk Municipal Board, presented the winner of a duck-safety art contest during the Seagoville City Council meeting.

Hudson said the board piloted the program with one elementary school and partnered with local businesses to promote “duck safety” and discourage feeding bread to pond ducks. “I’m so excited about this initiative,” she told the council, saying the pilot aimed to “get the government and school and community all partnered together.”

The board displayed contest entries in the hallway and arranged a three-week exhibit at American National Bank. Hudson quoted the bank’s manager, Katrina, saying the entries were distinctive: “I was genuinely impressed by the creativity and artistic approach.”

Participants received donations from local businesses; Hudson said each elementary classroom received candy from Megalitos, and the grand-prize winner will receive 12 custom T-shirts and a gift basket that included a cash award from Gordon Barber Shop. Hudson also named Sonic and Super 1 Foods among community supporters.

Hudson said the program had no participation requirement and that the board hopes to expand beyond the single elementary school used in the pilot. She announced that the winner’s artwork will be on display at the Seagoville Library and that the winner will be publicly recognized at Earth Central Park with a presentation involving the mayor and the school’s art teacher, Mr. Allen.

The presentation took place during the council’s agenda; no council action or funding decision was recorded on the contest itself.
