Sun Prairie staff recommends adding 0.5 personal finance credit for class of 2028, keeping total credits at 25

Dr. Sarah Chaiaclardi, presenting under the superintendent’s report, told the Sun Prairie Area School District Board of Education that Wisconsin Act 60 requires a standalone 0.5 credit in personal finance for students graduating in the class of 2028.

The recommendation from a district committee of teachers, administrators and student representatives would keep the district’s overall graduation requirement at 25 credits by reducing required elective credits from 10 to 9.5 and creating a separate 0.5-credit personal finance category beginning with the class of 2028. The board is expected to consider the policy changes on June 9; the district would revise Board Policy IKF and Procedure IKF-R if the board approves the recommendation.

Why it matters: Act 60 makes the half-credit a standalone course rather than content embedded in another class, and the Department of Public Instruction requires that any teacher of the course be DPI-licensed. The district must decide which department will offer the course, how to schedule it for students in grades 9–12, and how to avoid creating barriers for at-risk students or transfers from districts with different credit requirements.
