Elgin launches '78621 Live' podcast to spotlight downtown, city services

Elgin launched a new city podcast on air this week, Mayor McShan and Stacy Osborne, the city’s public information officer, said during the first episode of "78621 Live." The program is the podcast version of the Downtown 78621 magazine and will feature interviews about upcoming local projects, city services and events.
Mayor McShan said the podcast is intended to highlight Elgin’s history and people. “Elgin is unique in that the people make the city,” McShan said. Osborne described the episode as the inaugural broadcast: “This is our first episode of our new podcast.”
The podcast will cover a mix of government topics and community life, officials said. Planned segments mentioned in the premiere include an interview with Christina Alvarez, Elgin’s main street manager, about the city’s new Depot District; Peyton Sandefer, city secretary, on voting and election information; and Isaac Turner, acting city manager, on the manager’s role and his recent months in that position. The Downtown 78621 magazine, distributed to Elgin residents by mail, will serve as a companion to podcast topics.
Osborne said the city will use the series to help residents see elected and appointed officials as neighbors and community members. “I want people to be able to see that we are people,” McShan said, describing the aim to make local government feel accessible. Osborne and McShan said future episodes will include festival and event previews, spotlights on city employees, and features on local businesses and partnerships.
Mayor McShan noted personal ties to the community and to city facilities, saying they were born in the building that now houses the mayor’s office at the Fleming Center, a renovated facility that previously operated as a hospital. McShan also stated they have served as mayor since May 2022 and are in their second term.
