Board renews school resource officer contract, district cites close police partnership

Benicia Unified trustees on May 29 approved a contract with the Benicia Police Department to provide a school resource officer (SRO) assigned primarily to Benicia High School and Benicia Middle School.
District leaders said the department has been responsive to school needs and that staffing challenges had led to periods with reduced on‑campus coverage; the new agreement installs a newly recruited SRO who staff described as eager to serve in the role.
Superintendent Wright said the district values the relationship with the police department and noted the department’s willingness to discuss improvements and campus time allocation. "They show up," Wright said, praising the partnership and the department’s communication during incidents.
The board voted to approve the SRO contract for the 2025–2027 period. Trustees were supportive and expressed appreciation for the department’s recent response and collaboration. No contract dollar amounts were presented on the record during the discussion; staff said they would continue coordination with the police chief on duties and campus presence.
The vote carried on a board motion and second with no opposing votes recorded.
