Board names Janice Adams interim superintendent and approves short-term employment agreement

The Benicia Unified School District Board of Trustees on May 29 appointed Janice Adams as interim superintendent effective July 1, 2025, and approved an accompanying employment agreement describing a flexible work schedule and per-day compensation through the end of the interim assignment.
Board members introduced Adams, noting her prior service in the district, and Adams addressed the board saying her immediate goal is to "keep the progress" under current district leadership while the board conducts a search for a permanent superintendent.
The employment agreement presented to trustees provides a flexible schedule of three to five days per week, requires Adams to perform the standard responsibilities of a superintendent to ensure effective operation and administration of the district, and sets compensation on a per-day basis. The contract remains in effect until a permanent superintendent is hired, at which point the agreement will terminate, staff said.
Trustees moved and approved the appointment and the employment agreement in separate motions. The motions passed by board vote.
Adams told the board she was looking forward to working with the district team and pledged to "do my very best to keep things moving forward and look forward to working with all of you." Staff said they plan to begin a search company engagement in the coming days to recruit a permanent superintendent.
