Missoula County and the City of Missoula adopted the FY2025 operations, maintenance and capital improvement budgets for the Missoula Local Government Building Special District on May 29, 2025, following a staff presentation and no public comment.
The special district covers the former federal building at 200 East Broadway, commonly called the Engen Building. Missoula County Chief Administrative Officer Miss Sonesbury told the commission the district receives about $149,000 a year in lease income from the U.S. Postal Service, and the city and county split remaining operational costs equally. The FY2025 operations budget includes personnel and routine maintenance expenses; the capital budget anticipates architectural services and remediation work tied to a brownfields assessment.
Miss Sonesbury said the capital side includes about $160,000 for architectural services and roughly $87,000 to contract Jackson Contracting Group for remediation work. Under the proposal, the city and county each would pay about $72,000 toward operations and about $123,000 each toward capital improvements for the current fiscal year.
A commissioner moved to adopt the budgets; another commissioner seconded. There was no public comment in the hearing. The board approved the FY2025 Operations and Maintenance and Capital Improvement budgets for the Missoula Local Government Building Special District by vocal assent.
The special district was created by interlocal agreement between the Board of County Commissioners and the City Council after the federal government transferred the building to local ownership. The budgets adopt routine funding for building services, heating, insurance, and short-term occupancy (including a pretrial services program that is expected to move out in FY2026).
