Saint Barn CIC questions extra demolition charges after crews find unexpected debris

The Saint Barn Community Improvement Corporation on May 27 heard from board leaders who said a demolition contractor is asking for an additional $10,000 to $12,000 after removing unexpected concrete and debris at the former First State Bank/Skyline site.
Board president Jonathan Stuchel said crews working “on the old First State Bank building” reported they believed some of the material they were pulling out did not belong to that building and that the contractor’s trackhoe was “literally sitting on the entrance to the old skyline.” He added the contractor told the CIC it would take another “10 or $12,000 to get that out of there.” Stuchel said he is skeptical of the claim: “they basically had stated that they felt there was another building that potentially had been demolished...for them to say that it’s gonna take another 10 or $12,000...I’m not buying it.”
Chris Schollmeyer, whose family has familiarity with the building layout, described a layered interior in which retail seating led back into a kitchen area and then into a ramp and additional concrete “in that lower structure,” a configuration that could explain heavier-than-expected concrete in the excavation area.
Stuchel said he will follow up with the contractor and request photos and “some justification that it is not from our structure, which they had an opportunity to review prior to bidding.” He also said the CIC will allow the contractor an opportunity to document the claim before the CIC accepts any additional charges.
The board did not take a formal vote on the amount; members were told demolition is progressing and that the contractor expects to move to the next phase soon.
