Board staff reported to members that outside counsel Butler Snow has billed more than $300,000 for an investigation the mayor's office commissioned, and the board said it has not yet received a final report. Board counsel and staff said invoicing appeared to stop in March and that they are awaiting the written investigation.
Executive Director Fitchard presented redacted invoices and told the board the total tallied to “over $300,000” covering work that appears to have started about a year earlier. Attorney Brazil told members the invoices showed extensive work and that he and staff have “no reason to believe that the work is not ongoing,” but that recent invoicing had paused and the board awaited the final report.
Board members also noted a separate development: the former lieutenant who raised concerns that led to the inquiry, identified in the meeting as Garrett Davidson, was indicted in Robertson County and subsequently indicted in Davidson County on different charges. Attorney Brazil and other board counsel clarified that the Davidson indictment is separate from Butler Snow’s inquiry and should not be conflated with the investigative report the board commissioned.
The board asked counsel to follow up on the outstanding report and noted that the invoicing and length of the probe — nearly a year, members said — warrant further report-back. “Follow the money,” one board member said during the discussion; Attorney Brazil said the board will “await the report” and requested additional accounting if available.
No formal action was taken to close or reopen the investigation; members asked staff to request an update and to circulate any additional invoicing or draft findings when available.
