RSU 04 board advances first reading to remove transgender/gender-expansive policy JB

The RSU 04 School Board advanced a motion — by a vote to grant a first reading — to remove policy JB (Transgender and Gender-Expansive Students) and directed the matter to the policy and personnel committee for review and possible replacement.

Board member Scott argued the policy was not legally required and said the policy had been presented to the board in the past as a legal necessity. “It's not a required policy. We do not have to have this policy,” Scott said, urging removal so the policy committee could revisit the issue and propose alternatives before the next school year.

Other trustees raised sharply contrasting concerns. The board’s practice and procedures manual was also cited during the discussion: deleting or amending a policy requires the policy committee’s review and the board’s multiple readings under the board’s policy process.

After debate the board moved and seconded removal for formal first reading; the chair called the vote and the board approved advancing the removal to a required second reading.
