Nora Allstead, president of the Farmersville Teachers Association and a music teacher at Hester and Snowden, told the Farmersville Unified School District Board on May 28 that teacher retention needs renewed attention.
"We're seeing a number of resignations again," Allstead said, urging the district and union to convene the retention committee discussed in bargaining. She said some teachers receive outside offers and praised colleagues who choose to remain, but asked the district to interview departing employees to determine root causes.
Allstead also described a community moment at a May 17 rally in Hanford. She said the event drew "somewhere between 800 and a thousand people" and highlighted third-grade Snowden teacher Nancy Delgado, who Allstead said moved to the front of the crowd and handed a stack of her students' letters to labor leader Dolores Huerta.
"Nancy... was right up front... she's giving to her and saying, 'Miss Huerta, these are letters for my students,'" Allstead recounted. She said Huerta read some of the letters and that a Fresno Bee photograph shows Delgado standing directly behind Huerta at the rally.
Allstead closed by thanking the board for release time the district has provided to the teachers association president for meetings with Superintendent Manuel Mendez, and she asked the district and union to follow through on retention work begun in bargaining.
