The Blaine County School District No. 61 Board of Trustees on Friday approved a donor-funded scoreboard for Cary High School’s football and soccer field, district staff said, accepting a gift described as roughly $30,000.
District staff said donors were identified and that Lee Jay Cook had prepared groundwork and lined up community contributors to fund the scoreboard. Administration recommended board approval, noting the scoreboard is expected to have a long service life (an estimated 10 to 15 years).
Trustee Turner pressed district leaders to consider districtwide priorities and donor fatigue before soliciting funds for individual-school projects, noting the district has a limited pool of businesses and donors. Trustee Turner asked whether the scoreboard represented the highest need districtwide when seeking community contributions.
District staff responded that many identified businesses have local ties to Cary and that donors will receive advertising opportunities tied to the donation. Staff also said no donor offers were denied.
The board voted to accept the scoreboard donation in the action portion of the meeting.
This item was taken in open session after the board returned from an executive session called earlier in the meeting. The donation discussion included brief questions about Title IX or equity concerns; district staff said there were none related to this donation.
