Trafficway Bridge first week: Arroyo Grande implements detour, adjusts signals and asks public for feedback

The Arroyo Grande City Council received an operational update on May 27 as the city completed the first week of a full closure of the Trafficway Bridge and activated a detour plan.
City Manager Matt Downing said crews are observing traffic behavior and making near-term changes to ease congestion. Staff told council they will paint a "keep clear" box at the Branch and Bridge Street intersection to prevent vehicles from blocking turning movements, and they adjusted signal phasing at Mason and Branch to add separate northbound and southbound phases so backups clear more quickly.
Downing said a temporary traffic signal at Fair Oaks on Highway 101 is being finalized but that the city experienced power and lane-configuration complications tied to the offset of Orchard Drive from the off-ramp. He encouraged the public to provide constructive feedback so staff can refine the detour plan and noted project updates are posted at arogrande.org/twb and via the My AG app.
Public Works and traffic staff said they will monitor behavior throughout the closure and implement additional adjustments where warranted. The council thanked staff for their real-time monitoring and public communication during a prolonged closure that staff said will continue for several weeks.
