Selma’s community services and cultural arts staff presented the FY25–26 proposed budgets for recreation, senior programs, sports and the arts center and asked council for direction on expanding events and senior services.
Highlights included a proposed recreation/events budget of roughly $645,000 covering annual community events, a proposed sports budget for youth and adult programs, and allocations for senior activities and nutrition (the latter includes a recently awarded $25,000 Kaiser Permanente grant for senior meals). Cultural arts staff described program revenues and an enterprise fund model; they requested $30,000 for equipment and lighting upgrades and noted that programming revenues cover a portion of production costs but do not fully cover facility operating and overhead costs.
Council discussion emphasized collaboration with the downtown Business Improvement District (BID) for event programming and a desire to continue successful efforts such as Selma Live. Councilmembers urged staff to add budgeted funds for additional community events and to include at least one subsidized senior trip per year. Staff said they would prepare cost estimates and return with options, and that some events and programming are already planned as free community offerings.
What’s next: staff will work with the BID and present additional budget options for community events, provide cost estimates for senior trips (staff cited a sample Morro Bay trip at $105 per person and estimated the total trip cost at about $3,200), and return with proposals for cultural‑arts equipment and lighting upgrades.
