Hawaiian Gardens presents summer programs, new library manager and community events

Irene Zapata, the new community library manager at the Hawaiian Gardens Library, introduced herself during public comment Wednesday and invited residents to the library’s summer programs, including a weekly Smarty Pants story time on Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
City staff also announced summer recreation and community events: summer programs begin June 2; Leeward Park pool will be open Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; a day camp for children ages 7–12 runs Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and a pool party for families is scheduled May 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff said registrations for the programs are full, with one remaining camp spot noted.
Public safety staff announced a gun buyback on Friday, May 30, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Public Safety Center in partnership with the county sheriff’s department and the county supervisor’s office; staff said gift cards will be provided to participants in denominations ranging from $50 to $300.
Staff detailed a community block cleanup set for a June date (pick-up 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.) on Civic Center Drive between Pioneer Boulevard and Juan Avenue for Hawaiian Gardens residents (proof of residency required). In collaboration with Los Angeles County Public Works, the city will host a tire-recycling event for all LA County residents at the City Hall parking lot on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
