Commissioners discuss Senate Bill 190 application turnout, outreach and possible short deadline extension

Commissioners discussed the status and outreach for applications tied to Senate Bill 190 and asked staff to provide updated enrollment data so they can target outreach before the deadline. The commission encouraged residents in Sparta, Chadwick and other eastern communities to apply for the county’s program and said they planned to contact applicants who have not yet completed paperwork.

Commissioners noted the statutory June 15 postmark cutoff for notarized applications but said mailed applications postmarked by that date are accepted even if received later. One commissioner said the collector and assessor have an important state report due in July that constrains processing timelines, which is why the June 15 cutoff was set. Commissioners proposed collecting a current list of applicants and nonrenewals from the collector and said they would place phone calls to encourage or clarify applications; the commission also discussed a potential short extension of "another 3 to 5 days" if needed to increase participation.

Commissioners reported the last renewal count they had seen was 575 renewals and acknowledged that number may have changed; they also noted some residents will fall off the eligibility list for reasons such as moving, sale of property or entering assisted living. Commissioners said they would try to compile names of outstanding applicants and work with the collector’s office to remove ineligible entries so the county can process applications efficiently.

The commission announced a town-hall meeting in Chadwick that evening and encouraged residents in the Sparta/Chadwick/Brenner/Oakfield area to apply for the library board trustee opening and to attend the town hall. Commissioners did not take a formal vote on extensions; they asked the collector to supply updated counts and said they would reconvene or hold a work session if data show the need for further action.
