Summary
The school board approved amendments to the 2024–25 revenue and expense budget that the district says reduce the projected fund-balance shortfall to roughly $600,000 as of April; final revisions will follow the June 30 year-end and audit.
The Sparta Area School District board voted unanimously to approve revisions to the 2024–25 budget on a 5-0 roll call with two members absent.
The amendments, presented by district finance staff member Miss Hauser, reduce the district’s projected deficit to “about $600,000” as of April, an improvement from the $1.5 million revenue stabilization figure included in the original budget, Hauser told the board. "It ends us, as of April to have a deficit to the fund balance of about $600,000," she said.
The board heard that activities through the end of the fiscal year could change the final numbers. The district’s fiscal year ends June 30; staff said final budget revisions will be prepared after year-end and in advance of the external audit. The motion to approve was made by Colin Burns Gilbert and seconded by Dr. Burnett; the roll call vote was recorded as yes from the five members present.
Board members did not adopt additional programmatic changes at the meeting. Superintendent Sam Cantelon told the board he expects to submit administrative requests related to calendar timing and will return to the board if adjustments are needed, but no calendar change was approved at the meeting.
The approval directs staff to finalize the revised figures for audit and report any material changes back to the board.
Less-critical items discussed elsewhere on the agenda included facilities planning and recent donations to district staff and programs.
