Bridgeport police: DNA hit in 2023 attempted vehicle case; department reports recent arrests

The Bridgeport Police Department told the borough council it has identified a DNA match in an attempted motor-vehicle case from February 2023 and said investigators expect an arrest warrant to follow.
“We got a hit on, on DNA from 2 years ago,” the chief said, describing the case under investigation. The chief said investigators are working the lead and that it will likely produce an arrest in the summer.
The chief also summarized recent department activity: 14 retail-theft arrests, one assault arrest, four disturbance arrests, one DUI arrest, two warrant arrests and two citations under the ATV ordinance in the past weeks.
In addition, the chief announced two Bridgeport officers graduated from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police Command and Leadership Academy: Detective Sergeant William Murphy and Sergeant Evan Flora. The chief noted Murphy’s prior valor award in response to an active shooter in Lower Providence Township and described Flora as a field training officer and firearms instructor with prior U.S. Army infantry service.
The council received the report; no formal action was taken. The chief encouraged residents to contact the department with safety concerns and to call 911 when an incident requires immediate police response.
