Galena staff update council on water, sewer and lead‑line projects; bids to be sought for Hill and Elm Street work

City staff told the Galena City Council on May 20 that the lead service line replacement project is finishing restorations and that a punch list will be completed soon, and that the city will pursue another round of lead‑line replacement funding in 2026.
Staff reported that plan sets for the Hill Street sewer replacement project — sewer replacement between Prospect and High Street with added stormwater and road reconstruction — are ready and the city intends to solicit bids after easements are finalized and EPA permits are submitted. Staff also said Elm Street water project plans (connection from Fulton Street to Council Fire Circle) are ready to go to bid to create a redundant connection for Indian Ridge.
Other updates included: the municipal pool opened May 24 with a modest turnout because of cool weather; radar detector detector replacements will be coordinated with handhold repairs at three intersections; the pickleball court asphalt was delayed but paving is expected soon and volleyball court work will start; and the city consultant Wipfli is conducting the annual audit.
Staff said they are continuing the search for a city engineer, are meeting with a water‑meter provider about smart‑meter propagation study results and potential meter installations, and are planning a temporary handrail improvement on Field Street. Garbage collection was delayed one day for the week due to the holiday, and electronic recycling is scheduled for Friday.
