Katy council approves $325,226 construction contract for downtown town square improvements

The project is a capital improvement. City staff told the council bids were received May 8 and that the total project cost includes previously approved professional design services of $62,000; that design funding was approved March 25, 2024, under Resolution 1584.
During discussion, a council member asked whether the $62,000 design fee was included in the $387,226 total. City staff confirmed the design amount is part of the total and that the council was today awarding the construction bid of $325,226. Council members also discussed landscaping choices, noting a preference for native, low-maintenance plants; staff said maintenance for the square will be included in a future landscaping contract and budget cycle.
City staff also confirmed the construction bid price includes transport and on-site installation of elements that are currently in storage. A council member asked whether the work could be completed before an upcoming community event referenced in the meeting; staff indicated scheduling and programming would be coordinated but did not state a firm completion date during the session.
Members of the council and staff described the contract as the final piece of a long-running downtown transformation. Other logistical items raised during the session included the planned location of the Katy Corner (on a small patch of green southwest of the depot area, at the site used previously for the petting zoo) and a note that Ed Hayes is scheduled to address geese cleanup the Tuesday after Memorial Day.
