District committees outline Route 571 widening, property archaeology and softball-field safety upgrades

At the administration and facilities committee meeting, Dana reported the Route 571 project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026. The committee also reported that a Phase 2 architectural and archaeological evaluation is underway at 221 Southfield Road; the study, required by the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office as part of permitting, is expected to take about nine months and will assess potential historic, archaeological and cultural impacts.
The committee said a recent insurance valuation of the High School South softball field recommended steps to protect motorists on Route 571 from foul balls. The district plans to expand the current backstop this summer to reduce the risk of balls entering roadway areas.
Other facilities items discussed included principal meetings to review how planned solar carport construction will affect parking at school sites, disassembly of boilers at Village Elementary ahead of replacement, and districtwide summer projects to remove hallway carpeting at both high schools and install luxury vinyl tile in some areas. The committee said select classrooms across the district will also receive new flooring this summer.
No formal votes on design details were recorded in the facilities report; administration items were later approved as part of the meeting's consent agenda. The committee said it will continue to track final engineering plans and state permitting requirements and will report back on specific impacts and timelines.
