Planning Committee Seeks County Board Participation in Ashland County Comprehensive Plan Update

The Ashland County planning committee presented its organization for updating the county comprehensive plan and asked county board members to participate in at least one element subcommittee.

Committee leadership described how required statutory elements have been reorganized into working groups (transportation, housing, agriculture and forestry, economic development, utilities, cultural resources and community facilities) and assigned committee members and staff leads for each element. The committee emphasized that local boards and commissions can contribute input by placing comprehensive-plan items on their agendas and documenting the discussions in minutes, which will be accepted as public input for the plan.

The chair of the planning committee asked each county board member to join a working group to broaden participation, and staff noted Northwest Regional Planning will perform significant data work. The committee also announced notices inviting public participation would appear in the local press and that subcommittees would continue meeting through 2025 and into 2026 to gather input required by statute.

Speakers reminded supervisors that actions and ordinances adopted during the plan period must be consistent with the adopted comprehensive plan, making participation and documented public engagement important for future land-use decisions.

No action was required at the meeting; the presentation was informational and supervisors were invited to contact subcommittee chairs to join working groups or add items to committee agendas.
