Council committee accepts $35,000 Waikiki gift for HPD parking enforcement projects

The Committee on Public Safety and Customer Services accepted a $35,000 gift from the Waikiki Transportation Management Association special improvement district for Honolulu Police Department District 6 to address illegal activity, including parking violations in Waikiki.
Major Brandon Ogata, Waikiki Patrol District, told the committee the contribution is an annual gift used to fund projects that target problem areas such as Kalakaua Avenue, Kuhio Avenue and freight zones. He said the funds are used to set up targeted projects for available staff rather than to pay additional officer salaries.
When asked whether the money goes toward equipment purchases, Major Ogata said historically the funds have been used to support projects; he has been in the position about six months and could not confirm past equipment purchases.
The chair recommended that Resolution 25‑143 be reported out for adoption; no objections were recorded and the recommendation was ordered.
