The Mobility Committee approved an amendment to a construction contract to add and relocate restrooms as part of an expansion of the central TSA checkpoint at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
The director said the project will renovate five sets of restrooms beyond TSA screening and add one set relocated adjacent to the central checkpoint to accommodate an expansion from two lanes to four. The design will match recent restroom improvements and the estimated cost for the restroom work discussed in committee was $1,250,000. The director said the work is planned for this summer and that the checkpoint lanes and associated restroom relocation are targeted to open by the end of the calendar year.
Councilman Brian Casey asked whether adult changing stations would be included. Dennis Kramer, assistant director, airport development, said there will be a family restroom associated with the relocated set and that it “will have an adult changing table.” The director and staff said they are also identifying additional locations for adult changing stations, including on the secured side of the terminal.
Kramer said he met with the Cuyahoga County developmental-disabilities authority and scheduled a walk-through in June to coordinate design and best practices for adult changing facilities. Committee members also noted that savings from earlier demolition work (Sheraton demolition) helped free airline-approved funding to support this work; the director said funding ultimately comes from airline-supported airport funds.
The ordinance to increase restroom scope and ancillary spaces was approved in committee.
