The Northbrook School District 28 Board of Education approved a bid award for the Meadowbrook Elementary gymnasium project on Tuesday; district staff said the lowest bid came in under the district’s target.
The buildings and grounds committee and staff praised the architect’s plans for producing closely clustered bids, which the district said indicates clear design documents. The board authorized moving forward with construction contracts and noted the bid being under the target reduces the immediate capital burden.
Staff said neighborhood outreach occurred after the bid and that the district will publish required zoning notices and mail information to nearby residents; the district is scheduled to appear before the village for a hearing on June 17. Staff clarified that the school’s appearance before the village is required because the school is a special use, not because the district is seeking a zoning variance.
Superintendent Dr. Pearson and staff said that part of the first $15 million bond series will be used on Meadowbrook projects, and that construction is expected to begin after contract approvals with a formal groundbreaking likely in August to involve students in marking the start of work.
Board members asked about community concerns and the schedule; staff said neighbors’ questions were recorded and will be considered through the construction planning and communication process.
