Trustees review draft comprehensive plan; public comment period and outreach set before adoption

Consultants from SC Group presented a draft update to the Town of Buena Vista comprehensive plan at the May 27 trustees meeting, walked trustees through engagement work since mid‑2024 and outlined next steps for a month‑long public comment period.

The consultants described the plan structure—vision, topical chapters and an implementation chapter—and highlighted a new future land‑use map that shows preferred areas for residential densities, commercial/industrial zones, and a safety/connectivity overlay around schools and main corridors. They emphasized the map is a policy guide and not a zoning map.

Why it matters: The comprehensive plan guides rezonings, development expectations and capital investments for years. Staff and trustees discussed water, housing, transportation, recreation and climate adaptation recommendations. Trustees and advisory‑committee members asked for sharper data references (housing unit counts, income and taps) and more concrete actions on climate and post‑wildfire hazards.

Next steps: staff will post the draft for a public comment period, run targeted outreach (open houses, market events) and return to trustees for adoption (target July 8). Consultants asked trustees for detailed edits during the comment window and said implementation priorities can be set annually or through the town’s strategic planning process.
