Supervisor Gomez presented several District 2 community enhancement items the Board will consider in future agenda action.
First, Gomez urged supervisors to tour Camp Naco and proposed using community enhancement funds for architectural design of a flag pavilion honoring Buffalo Soldiers. Gomez described the site as an active community museum and event space and said funds would cover foundation, pole, flags and possibly lighting.
Gomez also said Sierra Vista will sponsor a Boys & Girls Club in Douglas; she proposed realigning previously allocated community enhancement funds toward an endowment for the Douglas club. She said Douglas lacked seed/endowment funding when earlier efforts to bring the club to the city failed and that repurposing the money now would better support the new sponsorship.
Finally, Gomez described a proposal to fund two summer basketball leagues in Douglas for middle and high school students, cosponsored by the city and a local organizing team; the leagues would serve charter and public school students and aim to provide supervised summer activities.
Board discussion was supportive in principle; Gomez said specific agenda placement for the endowment realignment is expected on June 17 and the basketball program item will appear on the next regular agenda. No formal votes were taken during the work session.
