Health department seeks renewal of ADEQ delegation for on‑site wastewater (septic) inspections

The Health and Social Services environmental health division presented a renewal of the delegation agreement with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) that authorizes the county to administer on‑site wastewater system reviews and complaints.
Natalie Johnson, lead of environmental health, explained the delegation covers septic/on‑site wastewater plan reviews, permitting and complaint responses for failing systems. Mike McGee (environmental health) told supervisors the county historically held the delegation (dating to the 1980s), briefly transferred it to Development Services when certain technical staff were unavailable, then later resumed the delegation when requirements called for a licensed engineer or registered sanitarian.
Supervisors had no substantive objections; staff said the delegation has existed for many years and the renewal maintains local administration of on‑site wastewater programs under ADEQ standards. The Board did not take action at the work session; the renewal will be placed on the regular agenda for formal approval.
