Cochise Health and Social Services presented a request to renew a First Things First grant that funds countywide child care health consultation services.
Emily Harris, director of clinical services for the health department, said the program provides training and safety consultation to child care centers serving children ages 0–5 across the county, including Douglas. The renewal is for one additional year through June 2026, for $138,420. Harris said the grant supports two part‑time positions, covers travel to geographically dispersed centers and uses no general fund dollars.
Supervisors asked whether the program covers child care homes versus licensed child care centers; Harris clarified the grant’s consultants work with licensed child care centers (independent proprietors) and do not regulate or directly manage family child care homes licensed by the Arizona Department of Economic Security. Harris estimated there are roughly 60 facilities served by the program but did not provide an exact roster during the work session.
The Board did not act at the work session; staff said the item will be presented for formal approval on the Board’s regular agenda.
