A State Department spokesperson told reporters on Oct. 11 that a ceasefire proposal for Gaza appears “promising” and that Israel had agreed to it, but added the department was unaware whether Hamas had accepted the proposal.
When asked by Andrea Mitchell whether the U.S. had a read on Hamas’s position, the spokesperson said, “We are unaware of Hamas accepting it, but we do believe that it has some significant promise.” The spokesperson said the administration’s priority has been securing the release of hostages and the return of bodies and that any ceasefire that enables those outcomes would be important.
Reporters asked whether Qatar, Oman or envoys including special envoy Witkoff had been involved. The spokesperson said special envoy Witkoff had been involved in related efforts and that progress could allow “more humanitarian aid to move in and certainly the return of hostages and bodies.”
A later reporter, Nadia, stated on the record that she had been told both Israelis and an unnamed other party had agreed; the spokesperson characterized the moment as one of optimism while noting uncertainty about Hamas’s position. The spokesperson declined to provide additional details about the text of the proposal or timetable for implementation.
