Economic development committee reports interest in data centers, Amazon warehouse possibilities and agritourism pitch

The Economic Development Committee told the board that it is actively researching several prospective projects, including potential data centers, outreach related to small Amazon distribution facilities and an agritourism event venue proposed by applicant Molly Wilshire.
Committee members said data-center research is ongoing and that the county is studying power and water requirements, environmental impacts and examples from other jurisdictions. The committee has scheduled a site visit to an Inova data center on July 8 to learn more about operations and resource use.
The committee also reported early-stage contacts about Amazon’s regional small-warehouse initiative; staff and committee members described that outreach as initial and exploratory.
Molly Wilshire, an applicant for the committee and a presenter to the committee, described a proposed seasonal agritourism venue on her property accessible from Oak Park. Committee members said Wilshire has experience in agritourism and event operations and that her plan initially would run weekends and seasonal events (for example, a Christmas light show) rather than year-round operations.
Committee chair Jim Jewett said the group is impressed with the applicant’s preparation but emphasized due diligence before any project moves forward. The board approved Wilshire’s appointment to the Economic Development Committee at the meeting.
The committee recommended the county hold a public town-hall meeting this summer to inform residents and solicit feedback, to counter “wild stories” and misinformation already circulating about prospective projects such as data centers.
No formal approvals for any of the projects were made; committee members said they will continue research and bring proposals back to the board when ready.
