Board upholds denials of three zone waiver appeals after committee hearings
Murfreesboro City Schools’ board upheld committee decisions to deny three zone waiver appeal cases at the May 27 meeting after district appeal hearings were held on May 9, 2025. The denials were unanimous on each packet.
Under state law and district policy the district advertised and accepted zone waiver applications in April. Parents who were denied received written notice and were allowed to submit a written appeal to the Office of Student Support Services within the ten-business-day window. The district then convened appointed committee members to hear each appeal on May 9; the committee either upheld or overturned the original denial. The board reviewed the committee packets and voted on each appeal individually.
For each of the three hearing packets presented at the May 27 meeting the staff recommendation was that the board approve the committee's decision to deny the appeal. Board members moved and seconded the recommendations and the chair called for voice votes; the board’s responses were recorded in the meeting as "Aye" with the clerk noting the actions were unanimous.
The board did not discuss individual case details on the public record during the meeting; the packets were provided to board members in advance for review. The actions taken were procedural votes to uphold the committee determinations of denial.
