Murfreesboro City Schools’ board approved three separate budget amendments at the May 27 meeting, reallocating existing summer learning funds and accepting new and revised grant revenues to support summer school staffing, after-school STEM services and kitchen permitting.
The summer learning amendment realigned a total of $97,207 within the district's previously approved summer learning grant budget after state guidance changed allowable expense classifications; the action transferred $72,207 from the summer learning transportation line to programming and shifted $25,000 within summer learning expenditures to cover janitorial services that were inadvertently omitted. The staff described the change as a cleanup of a grant that arrived late in the budget cycle.
In a separate amendment the board accepted $17,750 in supplemental funds to be added to the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st Century/"20 first century") grant for science and STEM enrichments. The grant will fund Kidspark mobile STEM labs, educator training and supplemental materials to integrate hands-on modules in after-school programming operated through the district’s ESP (Extended School Program).
The board also approved a small internal transfer of $1,200 within the nutrition department budget to move savings from food supplies to "other charges" in order to cover required state kitchen permits for fiscal year 25-26; staff noted the transfer has no impact on the fund balance.
Each amendment was presented by district staff with recommendation for approval. Motions were made and seconded for each item and approved by voice vote with no recorded opposition. For the summer learning amendment Miss Moore moved approval and Miss Long seconded; for the 21st Century amendment the motion carried after Mister Richardson moved and Mister Suttles seconded; for the nutrition transfer Miss Moore moved and a second was recorded. Staff noted the summer school staffing and programming corrections reflect state guidance and that the STEM labs will be used through ESP.
