Council confirms Central Parking District appointments as downtown garage rises; consultant support planned

The Haverhill City Council confirmed reappointments to the Central Parking District Commission intended to re-establish the committee’s role as downtown parking needs evolve with construction of a new parking garage.
Mayor Melinda E. Barrett told the council the Central Parking District had been inactive while temporary lots were used, but with the downtown parking garage rising rapidly she recommended reactivating the commission. The council confirmed the following reappointments by roll call: Josiah Morrow (one-year term expiring May 30, 2026), Joseph Romatelli (two-year term expiring May 30, 2027), Nusa Nukabe (two-year term expiring May 30, 2027) and Carl Bridal (three-year term expiring May 30, 2028). The vote was recorded 11 yeas, 0 nays.
Barrett said the commission will be assisted by consultant John Burke to plan parking strategy for Washington and Merrimack streets and for the new garage. She told councilors the commission members “will help us determine what parking looks like, going forward in the downtown area.” The mayor apologized that the appointees were not sworn in at the meeting and said that will be handled at a future meeting.
Councilors expressed appreciation to the appointees and the motion to accept the appointments passed by roll call.
