City staff told the council on May 28 that Barber Street will undergo repaving in a phased schedule spanning roughly a month in June and asked residents to expect traffic inconvenience during the work.
Staff presented a map and a five‑phase schedule: phase 1 (approach aprons on side streets) June 2–6; phase 2 (Acorn Terrace northward to ~300 feet short of Schumann Drive) June 9–13 and will use full‑depth reclamation (FDR) in that section; phase 3 (Schumann Drive to Pelican Island Place right‑hand turn) June 16–20; phase 4 (right‑hand turn to the railroad tracks) June 23–27; and phase 5 (railroad tracks to U.S. 1) scheduled as night work Sunday and Monday nights (June 29–30) to reduce impacts near the Publix shopping plaza.
Staff said they delayed the project until after the school year to limit disruption to school traffic and that the phased approach is intended to avoid removing the entire pavement depth in large sections, as occurred on another street. Work will be accomplished with single‑lane closures and the city will provide maintenance‑of‑traffic and police support where needed.
Staff asked residents to avoid the corridor when possible during the month‑long project and to plan alternate routes. The council acknowledged the project is badly needed and supported the schedule and phasing. No vote was required; staff will proceed with contractor scheduling and notify the public of exact start dates and any weather‑driven changes.
