Medford staff say architectural design work planned for Hegner Center after $850,000 federal grant

Medford City staff told the Facilities Committee on May 20 that work is advancing on plans to convert the Hegner Center into a vulnerability preparedness and climate resilience site after the city secured approximately $850,000 in federal funding.
Cindy Watson raised neighborhood concerns about the Hegner Center’s current condition and asked when work might begin. A city staff member responding to the committee said departments that plan to use the center have provided schematic designs and that staff will meet with outside architects to prepare formal architectural drawings as required by the grant process.
The staff update said that once architectural drawings are complete, the city can bid construction. The staff member described the work as moving the project “to the next step as part of our grant process to get the architectural drawings done” and said that background work has been occurring to prepare the site for construction bidding.
No vote or formal committee action was taken on the Hegner Center during the meeting. Committee members encouraged continued coordination among departments and asked staff for timing updates to address safety and neighborhood concerns while the design work proceeds.
