The Civic Center Commission approved an increase to $210,000 for a fire-alarm remediation project at the convention center after staff reported bids came in slightly higher than the $200,000 estimate.
"I hope to have those answered this coming month so that at the next meeting I can actually give you a schedule of construction," Matt, staff member, said. He described the work as focused on three locations and mainly involving replacement of modules to make a legacy fire-alarm system compatible with newer equipment.
Staff explained that Johnson Controls (JCI) no longer supports some of the installed equipment, prompting the replacement and the need for newer modules and improved enunciator functionality. The project scope includes a subpanel on the third floor, another on the first or second floor, and the main fire-alarm room.
Commissioners voted to approve the $210,000 authorization. Commissioners Chiafrito, Kevin Gould, Commissioner McElroy and Commissioner Tony Economo recorded affirmative votes; the motion passed.
Matt asked for latitude to round to $210,000 to allow modest change orders and to avoid returning to the commission for small adjustments. Staff said a construction schedule and finalized contract details will be provided at a subsequent meeting.
