Council authorized the mayor or her designee to submit a grant application to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ NatureWorks program for up to $150,000 to replace the playground at Maybach Park.
Administration said NatureWorks funds assist acquisition, development and rehabilitation of recreational areas and can cover up to 75% of eligible project costs; the required 25% local match would come from Community Development Block Grant funds. The Maybach Park playground — located in a low-to-moderate-income census tract and identified in the city’s 2021 playground evaluation as next in line for replacement — would get a new play structure, a pour-in-place rubber surface replacing wood chips, concrete curbing and improved site access.
Administration said the project is competitive for NatureWorks and that additional block-level improvements are being considered by the Community Development Division to amplify neighborhood impact. If awarded in fall 2025, staff said construction could occur in spring or summer 2026.
Council members who represent the area voiced support. The resolution authorizing the grant application passed on a roll-call vote at the May 19 meeting.
