The Vermilion City Council adopted Ordinance 25-33 authorizing the mayor to contract with Brush Truck Centers of Cincinnati to purchase a new International truck chassis for the Street Department for an amount not to exceed $114,566. Council also adopted Ordinance 25-26 to purchase the corresponding salt bed and related equipment; both ordinances were declared emergency measures.
Supporters said ordering the chassis now avoids higher future costs: one councilmember noted the vehicle could take about 18 months to arrive and that prices are likely to rise if the city delays. "If we wait, we're gonna be spending $2,020,000 dollars more easily," a councilmember said (paraphrased during discussion) to justify acting now. Opponents questioned whether the purchase should be made immediately and several members voted against the emergency declaration.
Roll-call votes recorded for the chassis purchase emergency showed a majority in favor and at least two dissenting votes; the salt-bed ordinance likewise passed by roll call. Council members noted the older truck being replaced had taken heavy wear and that reliable winter equipment is critical for street access and public safety.
The ordinances authorize the finance director to make payments up to the stated amounts and direct the service department to manage delivery and equipment installation. The council did not amend the dollar cap stated in the ordinance.
