On behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Vermilion, Jackie Atkins told the Vermilion City Council that the club mailed a sponsorship check in March for a youth team but has received little follow-up from the city’s recreation department.
The club representative said the online sponsorship form appeared designed for parents, did not list basketball, and that after calling the department the club mailed a check that was cashed on March 28. "We mailed both a check with a sponsorship letter, shortly after that. The check was cashed on March 28," Atkins said. She added that the club made several calls and left voicemails in May but received no substantive response about which team would receive the funds.
Atkins said a department staffer named Chad later told a club member he would speak with his assistant and that the money would be used for basketball; Atkins said the club had not sent an email and maintains it met the stated deadline in mid-April. The club asked the council to review the sponsorship process to improve communication and accountability.
Council members acknowledged the comment during the public-comment period and suggested the club meet with staff; one council member recommended attending a scheduled meeting to raise the matter directly with recreation staff.
The council did not take formal action on the item during the meeting. Atkins said the Kiwanis Club "remains committed to working with the city and supporting local programs and look[s] forward to an effective collaboration in the future."
