Lorain City Council on Tuesday referred to committee a resident complaint about the Catholic Charity shelter on Eighth Street after a written letter described repeated incidents of loitering, panhandling, public drug use, indecent exposure and a claim that registered sex offenders are housed at the facility.
The correspondence, read into the record, said the shelter sits in a residential area near a school and asked the city to relocate the facility to a nonresidential site. The author said local businesses reported vandalism, trash and open drug use near the shelter and that residents have begun exploring legal options.
Mayor Bradley and administration staff told council they would convene police, fire, law department and other relevant agencies for a meeting to review the complaints. Administration scheduled a meeting with Lorain Police Department and other departments for next Tuesday at 2 p.m. to address the citizen complaint and promised to report back to council.
Councilmember Hedley made the motion to refer the matter to committee; the motion carried unanimously. Council emphasized desire to pursue collaborative solutions while also ensuring neighborhood safety and promised follow‑up after the interdepartmental meeting.
At least one council member said the complaint is serious and that administration will coordinate an operational review and share results with council once agencies complete their review.
