Houston County OKs lodging tax to fund tourism promotion

The Houston County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a lodging tax ordinance to permit the county to levy an excise tax on lodging to fund tourism, conventions and trade shows.
Commissioner Robinson moved to add Article 5, “Lodging Tax,” to Chapter 58 of the Houston County Code of Ordinances; Commissioner Towton (second) supported the motion and it carried unanimously after the board opened a public hearing and received no public comments. The board noted that a first reading had been held on May 6, 2025.
Commissioners acknowledged that a portion of revenue from the lodging tax will benefit the Museum of Aviation Foundation; CEO Dan Rhodes of the foundation was present and was thanked by the board. The board characterized the tax as a tool to provide additional funding for promoting tourism and related economic development activities. No amendments or follow-up tasks were recorded during the meeting.
