Committee backs bill expanding Lafayette Economic Development Authority redevelopment powers

The committee reported Senate Bill 107 favorably after testimony that the Lafayette Economic Development Authority needs additional powers to address blighted properties and expedite redevelopment in Lafayette Parish.
Mandy Mitchell, president and CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, told the committee the agency had hired a consultant to study best practices and identified two additional authorities needed to function as a high‑functioning redevelopment authority. "This bill will allow [the authority] to serve as a fully functioning, high functioning redevelopment authority for Lafayette Parish," Mitchell said.
Sponsors said the measure had been developed with parish and city leaders and would provide tools to address foreclosures, expedite quiet titles and support property redevelopment. Committee members recorded no objection and moved the bill forward.
The bill now goes to the House floor for further consideration.
