The committee reported favorably a group of local naming bills that would dedicate parks, recreation complexes and a medical building in several parishes.
Senate Bill 3 would allow Hospital Service District No. 2 of St. Martin Parish to name a medical building for Burton Dupuy. Guy Cormier, former parish president, described Dupuy’s work and quoted Dupuy’s own drive to seek a turnaround: "If we continue down this path, we're probably gonna be bankrupt in about 2 or 3 years. However, I have a plan," Cormier said recounting Dupuy’s effort to secure a management agreement that stabilized the parish hospital.
Multiple Lafayette bills — including Senate Bills 18, 76, 77 and 140 — would name a City Park recreation complex, Moore Park soccer complex, the Graham Brown Memorial Park recreation complex and Hyman Park complex respectively after local figures who led youth programming and parks and recreation work. Supporters noted city and parish resolutions in favor of the namings; motions to report the bills favorably carried without objection.
Sponsors said the naming requests were local proposals properly advertised and supported by city councils or parish governing bodies. The committee moved each local bill to the House floor.
