Committee advances bill to designate Whiskey Bayou as state park after Shell donation

The committee moved Senate Bill 88 favorably after testimony that a private donation of more than 4,000 acres to Terrebonne Parish could be designated a state park called Whiskey Bayou State Park.
Senator presenting the bill said the donated acreage from a Shell affiliate would form a nature preserve offering walking and nature trails and a large retention area to help local drainage. The sponsor told committee members "as of right now, we're not asking for any funding," and said local and private partners — including Shell Pipeline — had expressed interest in supporting elements such as a butterfly sanctuary.
Representative Domaine, who said she had worked on the project when on the Terrebonne Parish Council, described the site’s planned walking trails and drainage benefits. The lieutenant governor’s office is reported to be supportive.
Representative Domaine moved the bill favorably; the motion carried without objection. Support cards and a county master plan were on file.
Sponsors said no state appropriation was being requested at this time; implementation would depend on collaboration among parish, state and private partners.
