Committee backs resolution urging stronger FDA inspection of imported seafood

The committee voted to report HCR 8 favorably after testimony from Gulf shrimpers, parish officials and festival representatives who urged increased FDA testing and inspections of imported seafood to protect local industry and public health.
House Concurrent Resolution 8, which asks Congress to urge the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to increase inspection and testing of imported seafood, was reported favorably by the Senate Natural Resources Committee.
State Representative Mike Beham introduced the resolution and yielded to witnesses who had turned in support cards. Gracie Bork, introduced as the Delacroix Shrimp Festival queen, urged adoption, saying imported seafood creates risks including antibiotics, labor abuses, heavy metals and lack of traceability that threaten Louisiana shrimpers and consumers. “This resolution will ensure safety and sustainability of natural resources in an environmentally responsible manner for Louisiana citizens’ health,” she said.
Fred Everhart, Council Chairman of Saint Bernard Parish Government, and Amanda Moniz, Saint Bernard Parish Council member and commercial fisherman, also spoke in support. Everhart said the resolution helps protect the commercial fishing industry and asked for more testing and funding. Representative Beham and committee members including Senator Faizy and others noted the economic and health stakes for coastal communities.
Senator De Feacy moved to report HCR 8 favorably. With no objections, the committee approved the resolution and it was reported favorably.
