Michigan Technological University officials told the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education and Community Colleges that the university's recent R1 Carnegie Classification recognizes expanded research activity and positions it to compete for federal funding.
"This recognition places MTU in the top 187 research universities," the university president told the committee, noting Michigan Tech is one of two rural research universities with fewer than 10,000 students with that designation. He described research expenditures surpassing $100,000,000 last year and said 36 percent of Michigan Tech's research comes from the defense industry.
When Representative Zoe Rogers asked about the effect of federal grant disruptions, the president replied that about 3 percent of Michigan Tech's federal awards—roughly $120,000,000—have been canceled or frozen at the current moment. The president made the figure in response to the committee's recurring line of questioning and characterized the university's research partnerships with defense and industry as a driver of regional economic impact.
The presentation outlined research strengths at Michigan Tech in areas such as autonomous systems, cybersecurity, additive manufacturing, battery recycling and health engineering; the president described partnerships with the U.S. Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center and other Department of Defense-supported efforts. He also cited the university's Keweenaw Research Center and a Translational Health Engineering Research Center in Grand Rapids as examples of applied research infrastructure.
Committee members asked about the R1 process and the president explained changes to Carnegie criteria that allowed schools with deep but not broad research profiles—particularly STEM-focused institutions—to achieve R1 status. No committee action followed the presentation.
